For many young people, turning 18 marks a significant milestone, ushering in newfound freedoms and opportunities. During this period most young adults depend on their families for financial support as they pursue opportunities for employment and education.
However, for foster youth aging out of the system, this reliance on relatives may not be an option. Many are abruptly forced to become self-sufficient overnight. They have to learn many skills quickly and on their own, such as applying to college, setting up bank accounts, managing finances, taking out loans, writing resumes, applying for jobs, and obtaining health insurance.
